In a controversial decision, US President Donald Trump has eliminated essential rape protections for transgender individuals held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities and US prisons. This move, announced by the Department of Homeland Security, intensifies the ongoing challenges faced by the transgender community within the justice system.

As of January 8, approximately 68,990 individuals are detained in these facilities, many of whom are vulnerable to violence and abuse. The lack of protections exacerbates the already precarious situation for trans inmates, who often encounter discrimination and hostility.

This alarming rollback of protections raises significant concerns about the safety and dignity of trans individuals in custody. Advocates emphasize the need for comprehensive reforms to ensure that all individuals, regardless of gender identity, are treated with respect and protected from harm.
